Top 9 Ways to Fix PS5 Black Screen Issue image

In the immersive world of gaming, encountering a black screen issue on your PS5 can be frustrating. Whether you’re in the middle of an intense gaming session or gearing up for a cinematic adventure, a sudden loss of visual output can disrupt the gaming experience and ruin your day. But don’t worry, we’ve curated a comprehensive list of basic troubleshooting steps and advanced solutions to help you navigate through the potential causes behind the PS5 black screen issue.

Also, if you have a PS4 console with the same problem, check out our detailed guide on how to fix the Playstation 4 black screen issue.

Why Does the Black Screen Happen on PS5?

Unfortunately, there’s no one cause behind the Black Screen when it comes to PS5 consoles. Fortunately, troubleshooting the problem and fixing it can be quite easy. As soon as you discover what’s the problem with your TV or the console, you can start fixing it.

Here’s a short list of the most common PS5 Black Screen causes:

  1. The HDMI connection between the TV and the PS5 console is lost. Typically this happens due to a loose or damaged cable.
  2. The console displays games at a higher resolution than your TV model supports.
  3. PlayStation 5 software issues can also lead to a Black Screen. The software could be simply outdated, or not compatible with the TV software.
  4. Similarly, the device’s hardware issues can lead to a Black Screen. These issues are mostly physical damage to the console or the TV.
  5. Sometimes, the PS 5 doesn’t exit the rest mode correctly and will display a black screen.

These are the most common known issues that result in a black screen with PS5 consoles. Now let’s see how to fix them.

1. Check Your TV or Monitor

Before you dive into more complicated fixes, check if your TV or monitor is in working order. This is especially important if the PS5 console displays a black screen but the sound is unaffected. If you saw the PlayStation logo before the screen went dark, your TV or monitor works and you can continue troubleshooting the issue.

But if there was no display of the PS logo, but your console is working (you can see the blinking blue light on it), then you should check if your display device is still working. Plug in another console or a computer, return to the TV mode, or streaming device.

If your display works with other devices, but not with the PlayStation 5, you’ll know the fault is not in your TV or monitor.

2. Check the HDMI Connection

The HDMI connection is one of the top reasons users experience black screen with or without sound, or periodical black screen dropouts. HDMI is responsible for both video and audio output, and that’s why you might hear sound or not when experiencing a black screen.

Improper HDMI connection can be on either console’s or TV’s end. That’s why you’ll need to check both HDMI ports, as well as the cable integrity. First, unplug the HDMI cable from both the TV and console and plug it back in. Make sure it sits in the ports correctly and firmly.

Check the HDMI Connection image

In the meantime, while the cable is out, check it for breakpoints and any physical damage. You can also connect it to other devices to see if it works. If it doesn’t, you’ll need to replace the HDMI cable.

Finally, some TVs have multiple HDMI ports. Try switching the cable from one port to another and see if this helped solve the black screen issue.

3. Unplug Any Other Devices Using the TV’s HDMI Port

Some TVs have been known to display a black screen if there are multiple devices connected to their HDMI ports at the same time. This could be the reason why your PS5 is having trouble displaying the image on your TV or monitor.

The solution is simple, plug out any other devices that are using TV’s HDMI ports, and leave only the PS5 console plugged in. See if this fixed the issue. If not, continue reading.

4. Force Shut Down Your PS5 Console

If your console doesn’t boot properly, it can display a black screen after the logo. In other cases, the black screen can occur when your PS5 enters the rest mode and gets stuck in it. If this is what you’re experiencing, you’ll have to force shut down your PS5. Here’s how:

  1. Turn the PS5 console on.
  2. While it’s on, press and hold the power button until you hear two beeps. You’ll have to wait for the second sound signal around 7 seconds after the first one.
Force Shut Down Your PS5 Console image
  1. Release the power button on your PS5 after the second beep and wait 5 to 10 minutes for the console to cool down.
  2. Turn the console back on and see if it boots properly.

5. Power Cycle the Console and the TV

A power cycle is nothing else but a soft reset. It can fix a lot of issues you may have experienced with your PS5 console, including the display of pitch black screen. Power cycling your console won’t affect your files, apps, and games. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Power off your console. Press and hold the power button until the white light stops flashing.
  2. Remove the power cable from your console and the wall outlet. Remember that this step is very important. If you skip it, you aren’t power cycling your console.
  3. Wait for around a minute or two before returning the cable back to the console and the wall outlet.
  4. Turn your PS5 console on.

If you suspect the issue is with your TV instead of your console, you can power cycle your TV too. Turn it off, remove the cable from the power outlet, and wait a minute or two before plugging the cable back in and turning the TV on.

6. Boot and Fix the Console in Safe Mode

Booting the PS5 console in safe mode will allow you to fix various issues you might have. Safe mode is especially useful when the console is unresponsive, and you can’t to its dashboard to change settings and configurations.

To boot your console in Safe Mode:

  1. Press the power button on the front panel to turn your PS5 off.
  2. When the console powers off, press and hold the power button and release it only after the second beep.
  3. Connect the controller with the USB cable. The charging cable is very important here.
  4. Press the PS logo button on your controller to enter the safe mode.

Once you’re in the safe mode there are different things you can do to tackle the Black Screen issue. Let’s see them all one by one.

1. Restart PS5 in Safe Mode

Once in the Safe Mode menu select Restart PS5 and wait for the console to boot up.

2. Change the PS5 Output Resolution

If your TV doesn’t support the video output resolution selected within your PS5 console, it won’t display anything. You can change the output resolution to the proper one for your TV model within Safe Mode.

  1. In the Safe Mode Menu select Change Video Output.

3. Restore Default Settings

Sometimes, it’s the software issue or the console settings that are causing the black screen on PS5. Restoring it to the factory typically fixes it. All the settings and configurations you might save will be lost. But all the files, apps, and games will remain on your console.

Boot and Fix the Console in Safe Mode image 5

Once you are in the Safe Mode menu, select Restore Default Settings. The console will do the rest automatically, and you don’t have to do anything else but be patient.

4. Defrag or Rebuild Database

An issue with the PS5 database can also cause a black screen to appear. That’s why you need to defrag, more popularly called Clear Cache and Rebuild Database. To do it:

  1. Select the Clear Cache and Rebuild Database from the Safe Mode menu.
Boot and Fix the Console in Safe Mode image 6
  1. Select Rebuild Database on the next screen.

Wait until your PS5 console finishes the process. This should fix the black screen problem but also make your gaming console work faster.

5. Update System Software

Software bugs are a common thing on gaming consoles. That’s why you should regularly update the system software on your PS5. It helps get rid of any potential bugs and glitches that could cause various problems.

Follow these steps to update your PS5 system software:

  1. Once in the Safe Mode menu, use your controller and select the Update System Software option.
Boot and Fix the Console in Safe Mode image 7
  1. Then select to update from a USB drive or the Internet.

  1. Once you make this selection, follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the updates.

6. Reset PS5 Console in Safe Mode

Many users claim that performing a PS5 reset from the Safe Mode menu helped them get rid of the black screen issue.

But if you do the PS5 Reset, you’ll lose all your files, games, and apps stored on your device. This is why this option should be the last thing you try to fix the Black Screen on the PS5 issue.

To perform a PS5 reset:

  1. Once in the Safe Mode menu select the Reset PS5 option. It’s number 6 on the list.
Boot and Fix the Console in Safe Mode image 9
  1. On the next screen confirm you want to perform the reset.

Once the reset is done, your Black Screen problem should go away.

7. Use the PS5 Troubleshooting Mode to Fix the Console

If you don’t want to go through the Safe Mode options and troubleshoot the problem yourself, you can force your console to go into the troubleshooting mode and attempt to fix the issue. Here’s how:

  1. Turn your PS5 console on.
  2. When the PS Logo is displayed, unplug the console from the power outlet.
  3. The next time you turn on the device, it’ll go into the forced troubleshooting mode automatically.
  4. Wait until the console finds and fixes the problem.

8. Switch Picture Mode on the TV

If your Black Screen issue started after a console update, you should try changing the Picture Mode on your TV. Many users report this method helped them get rid of the black screen.

Switch Picture Mode on the TV image

Different TV models, such as Samsung, LG, Sony, or Vizio offer different picture modes. You can switch between Movie, Sports, Vivid, Dynamic, Game, or Standard mode. Each of these mods has different settings for different features your TV model has to offer.

Switch through the different Picture Modes until you find one that’s compatible with your PS5 Console.

9. Contact Sony Support

If none of the above methods helped you remove the black screen on your PS5 console, it’s time to contact Sony support. You might be dealing with a hardware issue such as a faulty GPU. If this is the case, you’ll need technical support.

Use your warranty to fix your Sony PlayStation console at no cost. But be patient as it could take several weeks for the console to be fixed or replaced. Visit the official PlayStation service web page to get the return authorization and shipping instructions, or call 1-800-345-7669.

There’s nothing worse than being in the middle of a gaming session when your PS5 crashes or the screen starts flickering white, green, or black. If the latter happens, it’s easy to worry that there might be something seriously wrong with your PS5. Whether this issue has been happening for a while or started recently after enabling HDR settings, there are a number of things you can try to solve the problem. We’ll show you 10 ways to fix PS5 screen flickering so you can get back to gaming.

PlayStation (PS5) Screen Flickering? 10 Ways to Fix image

Why Is My PS5 Screen Flickering?

If you’re wondering why you’re experiencing the PS5 screen flickering issue, there could be a number of reasons. The most common one is a handshake problem from the HDCP or transfer rate to the HDMI cable — or your HDMI cable may be damaged or faulty. Resolving this could be as simple as replacing your HDMI cable, or might involve tinkering with some settings on your PS5. For the PS5, an HDMI 2.0 or high-speed HDMI cable is the one to get. We’ll also look at some other things that could be causing the problem and ways to fix it below.

Related: Flickering screen not the problem? Learn how to fix a black screen issue on PS5.

1. Restart Your PS5

Turning it off and on again may be an age-old solution to common tech problems, but it rings true here, too. Restarting your console might make the issue go away if you’re looking for a temporary fix. If this resolves your problem for good, great! However, you might find the flickering starts up again after your PS5 has been on for some time.

2. Try Using Your PS5 Horizontally

This may sound a bit strange, but bear with us. If your console is usually vertical, try lying it down horizontally. This has solved the screen flickering issue for some people.

3. Disable HDR

If it seems like your PS5 screen flickering started after you edited HDR settings, you can try changing the settings back, then ensure HDR is disabled on both your console and your TV. Hopefully, this will solve the issue. Here’s how to disable HDR on your PS5:

  1. Go to Settings > Screen and Video.
  2. Scroll down to Colour and select HDR.
  3. Select Off.
  4. Restart your console to ensure the changes are applied.

4. Adjust Your Transfer Rate Settings

If you’re still experiencing issues with your PS5 screen flickering, you can try changing the 4K transfer rate to -1 or -2, as this seems to fix the issue for many gamers. Here’s how to do that:

  1. On your PS5, go to Settings > Screen and Video.
  2. Select Video Output, scroll down, and select 4K Video Transfer Rate.
  3. Change the transfer rate setting to -1 or -2.
  4. Save the changes and restart your console.
  5. Hopefully, one of these changes will stop the screen flickering.
Adjust Your Transfer Rate Settings image

5. Disconnect your PS5

Handshake issues with your HDMI cable could be the culprit of your PS5 screen flickering. Disconnecting everything could help! Here’s what to do:

  1. Unplug your PS5 from the TV for 60 seconds by removing the HDMI cable at both ends.
  2. Turn both your TV and PS5 off and remove the power cables.
  3. Then, plug everything back in, power things up, and see if the issue is fixed.

6. Adjust Resolution, RGB Mode, and HDCP Settings

If none of the above fixes have worked for you so far, another thing you can try is disabling game mode and HDCP (high-bandwidth digital copyright protection) by going into your PS5 settings. HDCP prevents external devices recording video from your console, so don’t disable this if you’re using a game capture device to record video. If you want to disable HDCP, here’s how to do that:

  1. Go to Settings > System.
  2. Choose HDMI.
  3. From the list of options, turn the toggle off next to Enable HDCP.
  4. Restart your PS5 to see if the issue is resolved.
Adjust Resolution, RGB Mode, and HDCP Settings image

To turn off game mode, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > ALLM and turn the setting off. You can also disable your TV’s Game Mode to see if this helps.

Adjust Resolution, RGB Mode, and HDCP Settings image 2

The PS5 screen resolution is set to Automatic by default. However, if you’re experiencing PS5 screen flickering, you can try reducing the resolution to 1080p to see if this resolves the issue by going to Settings > Screen and Video > Resolution and manually selecting 1080p.

Adjust Resolution, RGB Mode, and HDCP Settings image 3

Setting the RGB Range to full or limited may also help. Here’s how to do this:

  1. Go to Settings > Screen and Video.
  2. Scroll down and select RGB Range.
  3. By default, this should be set to Automatic (Recommended).
  4. Try changing it to Full and save your changes.
  5. Restart your console to see if this fixes the issue.
  6. If it’s still flickering, try changing RGB range to Limited, saving your changes, and restarting.
Adjust Resolution, RGB Mode, and HDCP Settings image 4

7. Update your PS5

Not having the latest updates installed on your console could be causing issues. Try updating your PS5 system as well as your TV firmware to see if you can fix the screen flickering problem. To do this, go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings to check for the most recent updates.

8. Enable Performance Mode

The PS5’s Performance Mode favors high frame rates, and turning it on might help with issues if your PS5 screen is flickering. Here’s how to enable it:

  1. Go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
  2. Select Game Presets > Performance Mode or Resolution Mode.
  3. Ensure Performance Mode is selected.
  4. Restart your console.
Enable Performance Mode image

9. Adjust Screen Size/Display Area

Still no luck? Some PS5 owners have reported that adjusting the screen size or Display Area so it’s a bit smaller has resolved issues with screen flickering. Here’s how to do that:

  1. Go to Settings > Screen and Video.
  2. Select Screen.
  3. Select Adjust Display Area.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to select a smaller display area.
  5. Once you’re finished, save any changes and restart your PS5.
Adjust Screen Size/Display Area image

10. Replace Your HDMI Cable

As mentioned earlier, the issue could be as simple as a faulty, damaged, or incompatible HDMI cable. Check that you’re using a high-speed or HDMI 2.0 cable and that it isn’t frayed or damaged. If you’re using a slower cable or if it is damaged, replacing it with a new one could be the key to solving your PS5 screen flickering issue. Luckily, HDMI cables can be sourced cheaply from Amazon and other retailers.

Hopefully, one of these fixes worked for you! If none of these fixes have stopped your PS5 screen flickering, it might be time to reach out to the retailer you bought your PS5 from, if you purchased it recently, or to Sony for support and a repair or replacement so you can get back to gaming. Before you go, check out our fixes to try if your PS5 isn’t connecting to your TV.

Although PS4 is one of the best gaming consoles and it’s been around for a decade, it doesn’t come without issues. Many users report their PS4 keeps disconnecting from WiFi. It is really bothersome when this happens in the middle of a game and you lose all your progress. If this is something you’re having issues with, you’re in the right place.

In this article, we’ll discuss why your PlayStation 4 console keeps disconnecting from WiFi, and we’ll show you several potential fixes. However, you’ll have to do some troubleshooting first to discover the reasons behind the constant disconnections. Fortunately, all the proposed fixes are quick to try and you’ll be back playing your favorite PS4 games in no time.

Why Does My PS4 Keep Disconnecting from WiFi?

If your PS4 constantly drops the WiFi connection, it could be due to:

  1. Outdated firmware of either the console or the router. If the PS4 or router’s firmware is outdated, they would be incompatible with one another. Your PS4 will keep disconnecting from WiFi.
  2. PS4 database corruption. A corrupted or overloaded database table of PS4 can cause PS4 network modules to fail executing their operations and the result would be frequent internet disconnections.
  3. Wrong DNS settings. Your WiFi router could forcefully close any PS4’s web requests if the DNS servers are experiencing any issues and fail to respond. This often happens when the DNS servers can’t translate the web addresses of the PS4-related traffic due to wrong settings.
  4. Wrong router configuration. It could be that your router is not properly configured and it causes frequent WiFi disconnections.
  5. Weak WiFi Signal. WiFi signals can easily weaken if it’s affected by interference. Maybe your router is too far away from the console.

As you can see there are different reasons why your PS4 gaming console keeps disconnecting from WiFi. So try to figure out why you are experiencing this issue or simply apply each fix on our list until one works for you.

1. Perform a Connection Test

If you’re wondering if your PS4 has a stable WiFi connection, you should perform a connection test. It’ll help you get an insight into the network problems that are causing your gaming console to frequently drop the WiFi connection.

  1. Start your PS4 console and go to Settings.
  2. Select Network from the menu.
  1. Select Test Internet Connection.
  1. Once the test is over check if the PS4 problem is solved.

If you’re certain your PS4 console has a stable WiFi connection, but you keep getting disconnection errors, you should know that some games, such as Ghost of Tsushima, send false disconnection notifications during the gameplay.

2. Move Your PS4 Console Closer to the WiFi Router

If you notice your WiFi connection is not stable, just moving your PS4 console closer to the router could solve this problem. This will increase the signal strength and reduce the chance of experiencing disconnections. You can also opt for moving the router somewhere where it won’t be physically blocked by anything else. Metal objects that are blocking the router are the main problem, so make sure there are no house appliances, other gadgets, or even walls between your PlayStation 4 and the router.

If you’re not only experiencing frequent WiFi disconnections but also noticed your games are lagging, you should consider switching to an ethernet cable. Don’t rely on a patchy WiFi connection when an ethernet cable ensures optimal connection stability and speed.

3. Power Cycle the PS4 and Restart Your WiFi Router

Your PS4 device might be getting constant WiFi disconnects because there’s a temporary glitch with your console or router, such as a glitch in the communication modules between the PS4 and the router. The best course of action is to perform a cold restart of both devices.

Follow these steps to Power Cycle the PS4 gaming console and the router simultaneously:

  1. Open the Quick Menu on your PS4 and select the Power button.
  2. Select Turn Off PS4.
  1. Once you are sure your console is completely powered down, unplug the power cable.
  2. Turn your router off and unplug the power cable.
  3. Wait at least 30 seconds before turning both devices on again. This will allow them to fully power down and clear their memory.
  4. Plug back the cables in the router and turn it on.
  5. Make sure there are no other devices connected to the WiFi.
  6. Plug the cable back into your PS4 console and turn it on. Check if the WiFi connection is stable.

If the problem persists, check if other devices work properly when they are connected to the same WiFi.

4. Change the WiFi Frequency Settings

While the old PS4 models support only the 2.4 GHz frequency, PS4 Pro supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. However, the 2.4 GHz frequency is the default one for all PS4 models. If you have PS4 Pro don’t hesitate to change the frequency settings. 5 GHz offers a faster rate of data transmission. This could resolve your issue with the WiFi connection.

Follow these simple steps to change the frequency settings on your PS4 Pro console:

  1. Turn your console on and go to settings.
  2. Select Network from the menu, and then select Set up Internet Connection.
  1. Select Use Wi-Fi from the offered solutions.
  1. On the next screen choose Easy.
  1. Now press the Options button on the controller and select Wi-Fi Frequency Bands.
  2. Now select 5GHz and apply the changes.

Make sure you reboot your PS4 and see if this solves your WiFi issues.

5. Update the PS4 Firmware

Updating the PS4 firmware to the latest version is a great way to deal not only with the WiFi connection issues but also with any glitches and bugs you might be experiencing with your console.

Here’s how you can update PS4 firmware:

  1. Go to Settings and select System Software Update.
  1. Select Next, and then Update or Update Now, and your console will automatically install the update.
  1. The console will reboot after the updates are fully installed. After the system is on again, check if the WiFi problem is still there.

6. Change DNS Settings

DNS stands for Domain Name System and it’s a crucial part of the PS4 network connection settings. Its role is to make the communication between the console and the router seamless. Changing the DNS settings might fix network problems and help your PS4 console establish a stable wireless connection.

Follow these steps to change the DNS settings on a PS4 console:

  1. Go to Settings and select Network, then Set Up Internet Connection.
  1. Select Use Wi-Fi.
  1. Choose Custom.
  1. Select Automatic under the IP Address Settings.
  1. Select Do Not Specify under the DHCP Host Name.
  1. Choose Manual under the DNS Settings.
  1. Enter the following Primary and Secondary DNS values:

Google
Primary: 8.8.8.8
Secondary: 8.8.4.4

Cloudflare
Primary: 1.1.1.1
Secondary: 1.0.0.1

  1. Next, in the MTU Settings select Automatic, and at the Proxy Server window select Do Not Use.

Finally, select the Test Internet Connection button to check if your Wi-Fi connection works properly.

7. Restore Default PS4 Settings

If your PS4 console settings are improperly configured, you might experience frequent WiFi disconnections. Just resetting them to default might fix the issue for you. If you opt to reset the console’s settings, you should know you might lose some game saves, but no content will be deleted. All your games, screenshots, videos, and apps will remain intact.

Here’s how to reset the PS4 settings to default:

  1. Power off your console and press and hold the power button to enter the safe mode.
  2. Wait until you hear the second beep sound and only then release the power button.
  3. In the safe mode screen select the Restore Default Settings. It’s the fourth option.
  1. Once the console’s system is back up, check if your WiFi connection issue is resolved.

8. Rebuild PS4 Database

Maybe your current data table on the PS4 is overloaded, or not optimal, and is causing constant WiFi disconnects. If this is the case, your only option is to rebuild the PS4 database. During the process, the system will scan the storage drive and create a new database of all the content. All the corrupted data discovered during the scan will be automatically deleted. But don’t worry, but that doesn’t mean you’ll lose data from your console. The deleted corrupted files will simply be replaced with fresh versions. This means rebuilding the PS4 database is a safe process. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Power off your console and press and hold the power button to enter the safe mode.
  2. Wait until you hear the second beep sound and only then release the power button.
  3. In the safe mode screen select the fifth option, Rebuild Database.
  1. Wait until the system finishes the process. Depending on how big your database is, this could take anywhere from several minutes to several hours.
  2. Once the process is done and the database is rebuilt, check if you are still having WiFi connection issues.

If this didn’t solve your issue you might want to try rebuilding the database for the second time. But this time, keep your PlayStation 4 console powered off for a whole day.

Remember that a stable Wi-Fi connection is crucial for an uninterrupted gaming experience, and by following these steps, you can regain control of your gaming destiny. Whether it’s resolving interference issues, optimizing your network settings, or performing a factory reset, these methods can help ensure your PS4 stays connected to the internet, allowing you to immerse yourself in your favorite games without interruption.

Does your Sony PlayStation 5 randomly turn itself off? That sounds scary, and you’re probably dealing with a hardware malfunction. But before arriving at that conclusion, it’s always best to rule potential system settings conflicts, console firmware errors, and common power-related issues out of the equation.

This troubleshooting guide will walk you through multiple suggestions and solutions for a PS5 console that keeps automatically shutting down.

Playstation 5 controller

1. Disable PS5’s Sleep Mode

If you’re new to the PS5, it’s easy to confuse Rest Mode with unexpected shutdowns. Rest Mode is a low-power state that suspends the console, allowing you to boot it up and resume games faster.

By default, the PS5 automatically enters Rest Mode after 20 minutes of inactivity—the casing’s light turns amber when that happens. If you’d like to disable Rest Mode or lengthen the duration before it kicks in:

  1. Select the Gear icon on the top right of the Home Screen.
  2. Scroll down the Settings menu and select System.
  3. Go to Power Saving > Set Time Until PS5 Enters Rest Mode.
  4. Set During Media Playback and While Playing Games to Don’t Put in Rest Mode or pick an extended period—e.g., 1, 2, or 3 hours.
Set timer until PS5 enters rest mode, while playing games option, choose Don't Put in Rest Mode

2. Check the HDMI Link

HDMI Device Link on the PS5 allows the console to power on when you switch on your TV. However, a particular sub-setting within this feature also forces the console into Rest Mode when you turn off the TV. If that seems to be the issue you’re facing:

  1. Visit the Settings menu on your PS5.
  2. Go to System > HDMI.
  3. Under Enable HDMI Device Link, deactivate the switch next to Enable Power Off Link.
Enable Power Off Link option

3. Check the Power Cables

If the PS5’s shutdowns aren’t related to Rest Mode, it’s best to confirm there’s nothing wrong with the power strip or extension cord supplying power to the console.

Just connect the PS5 directly to a wall outlet and check if it continues to turn off randomly. If it doesn’t, consider replacing the power strip or extension cord to ensure stable power delivery.

While at it, check the power cable leading into the console’s casing for signs of fraying or damage and replace it if needed.

4. Rebuild the PS5 Database

A corrupted PS5 database can lead to system failures and unexpected shutdowns, so the next logical fix is to rebuild it in Safe Mode. The procedure takes several minutes to complete and depends on the amount of data within the SSD and any extended storage drives you’ve connected to the console. If you’d like to go ahead:

  1. Turn off your PS5 and hold the Power button until you hear two beeps.
  2. Connect your DualSense controller to the PS5 via USB.
  3. Press the PS button to enter Safe Mode.
  4. Select the Rebuild Database option.
  5. Wait for the console to rebuild its database.

5. Power Cycle Your PS5

Power-cycling a PS5 is an effective way to deal with random firmware-related issues that crop up with the hardware components inside the console. Unlike a standard shutdown and reboot, a power cycle requires you to:

  1. Turn off the PS5.
  2. Disconnect the console from the power outlet and wait. Sony’s recommendation is 20 minutes.
  3. Reconnect and turn on the console.

6. Install the Latest Firmware Updates

Up-to-date system software and firmware play an essential role in ensuring the stability of the PS5. The standard method to update the console is to:

  1. Open the PS5’s Settings menu.
  2. Go to System > System Software Update and Settings.
  3. Select Update System Software.
Update System Software option

If your PS5 keeps shutting down repeatedly before it can download and install newer updates, try updating the console in Safe Mode.

7. Check for Video Game Updates

If the PS5 shuts down only while playing a specific video game, it’s worth checking if any updates from the developer could rectify the issue. To do that, highlight the game’s Home Screen thumbnail and select Check for Update.

Check for update option

If there are no new updates, you must wait until the next update hits the PlayStation Network. Unfortunately, older games typically don’t receive updates—e.g., that can be problematic when running PS4 games via backward compatibility.

8. Reset the PS5’s Settings

Resetting your PS5 preferences to factory defaults addresses shutdowns caused by corrupt, broken, or misconfigured settings. The process doesn’t result in data loss, so here’s what you must do:

  1. Open the PS5’s Settings menu.
  2. Select System > Reset Options.
  3. Choose Restore Default Settings.
Restore Default Settings option

9. Stop Console From Overheating

Over time, dust and debris build up on your PS5, blocking its vents and causing the internal components to overheat. Since that can lead to protective shutdowns, clean the console to airflow and check if that makes a difference. Here’s how:

  1. Disconnect the PS5 from its power source.
  2. Unscrew the stand from the casing.
  3. Use compressed air to blow out dust from the PS5’s air vents. Hold the can upright and keep the nozzle a few inches away to avoid moisture contact.
  4. Wipe the exterior of the casing with a microfiber cloth.
  5. Re-attach the stand in vertical or horizontal alignment and reconnect the console to its power source.

Check our guide to resolving overheating issues on the PS5 for additional tips and tricks.

10. Factory Reset Your PS5

Factory resetting your PS5 is a last-resort measure to resolve random shutdowns. However, unlike a standard settings reset, the procedure erases all data, so back up games, apps, and save files before proceeding. Once you’ve done that:

  1. Boot your console into Safe Mode.
  2. Select the Reset PS5 option.
  3. Wait until the console resets the system software.
Reset PS5 option

If the reset procedure fails, select the Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) option, download the PS5’s system software to a USB flash drive via a PC or Mac, and use that to reset and reinstall the PS5’s software. For comprehensive step-by-step instructions, refer to our complete guide to factory resetting the PS5.

Contact Sony Customer Support

If your PS5 continues to shut down despite trying all the above solutions, the problem’s likely due to a severe hardware issue, possibly with the power supply unit inside. In that case, you must reach out to PlayStation Support for further troubleshooting advice. If your game console is within its warranty period, you should qualify for a free repair or replacement.

Wi-Fi is super convenient, and if all you want to do is download games, it will do the job just fine. If you want a perfect multiplayer gaming experience or the fastest download speeds, Ethernet is best, so let’s look at the best ethernet cable for gaming on PS5.

What To Look for in a PS5 Ethernet Cable

Buying an Ethernet cable for PlayStation 5 with all the different stats and codes attached to the various options can be utterly confusing. Ethernet has been around for a long time, so there are many variants regarding cable speeds and ratings. Here’s what you should pay special attention to when picking a cable for your PS5.

Cable Standards: Understanding the Options

When it comes to the PS5, Cat5e might seem enough, and indeed, it’s suitable for 1Gbps, which is as fast as the PS5 Ethernet port. So why are gamers eyeing Cat6, Cat7, or even Cat8 Ethernet cables? Let’s look at the main modern Ethernet options:

  1. Cat5e cables: It matches the PS5’s 1Gbps port. It is acceptable for most gaming experiences, but you may run into longer-length performance issues. That said, Cat5e is rated for 328 feet or around 100 meters. Cat5e cables are unshielded, so they are vulnerable to crosstalk, a type of interference.
  2. Cat6 and Cat6a cables: This is a step up in bandwidth (up to 250 MHz for Cat6 and 500 MHz for Cat6a), which can mean better performance in a crowded network environment. Plus, Cat6a offers additional shielding against crosstalk. For PS5, the only real advantage is the extra shielding and perhaps less latency since it can’t take advantage of 10-gigabit speeds, but in general, we feel Cat6 overall is the best Ethernet version for PS5.
  3. Cat7 cables and Cat8 cables: We don’t recommend them for use with a PS5; there’s no real benefit, and the thick shielding in some models makes the cables harder to work with.

Remember that regardless of the cable’s rated speed, you’re ultimately limited by your internet speed, which for most people in the world is nowhere near 1Gbps, no matter how fast their home network is.

Connectors and Conductors: It’s What’s Inside That Counts

Have you ever opened up an Ethernet cable? The magic happens on the inside, thanks to connectors and conductors, which can differ based on quality and cable type. When buying a network cable for your PS5, consider the following:

  1. RJ45 (Ethernet) Connectors: Gold-plated RJ45 connectors won’t make your internet go faster, but they can reduce or eliminate corrosion, which can put a damper on your downloads.
  2. Copper Wires: You want a cable that uses pure or “bare” copper as a conductor. Avoid cables that use Copper-Clad Aluminum (CCA), which can be a fire hazard and potentially perform worse. CCA cables are often ridiculously cheap but not worth it.

Build and Design

Some varieties of Ethernet cable offer features beyond speed or shielding against interference. Flat cables, for example, might be easier to manage or slip through gaps if you’re trying to neaten your setup.

Likewise, “snagless” Ethernet cables have RJ45 connectors for frequent insertion and removal. Unless you’re moving your PS5 around or constantly swapping the cable with other devices, Snagless cables aren’t worth it versus standard molded cables.

Cable Length and Durability: Match Your Space

Ensure the cable is long enough for your space; you don’t want a 150-foot roll of cable when you only need 20 feet. You’ll also have to pay attention to the durability of the cable. If you install it permanently, you want something that will last many years without you having to dig it out again. This is one of the areas where Cat 7 and Cat 8 cables may have an advantage, but even within Cat 5e and Cat 6 cable options, some will promise better durability.

How To Set Up an Ethernet Connection on Your PS5

Before we get into the different Ethernet cable options out there for your PS5, let’s quickly go over how to use an Ethernet cable with your PS5:

  1. First, plug one end of your Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port on the back of your PS5 and the other into the port on your router.
  2. From the home screen on your PS5, select the Settings icon.
  1. Go to Network
  1. Go to Settings
  1. Select Set Up Internet Connection
  1. Choose Set Up Wired LAN (This can’t be screenshotted).
  2. Name your network and select Connect.
  1. Go back to Connection Status and choose Test Internet Connection.
  1. Confirm that everything looks correct.

Now, you can use Ethernet for game downloads and other network functions on your PS5. With this knowledge, let’s look at some of the best Ethernet cables on Amazon for your PS5.

If you’ve ever encountered a black screen on your gaming console, you know how frustrating it can be to interrupt your gaming adventures and wonder what went wrong. You’ll receive no error code that’ll give you a clue what the problem is, only the blank screen. So, how do you deal with a PS4 black screen issue?

Luckily, when you get a black screen, it means the issue is relatively easy to fix. If you experienced a black screen while playing PS4 games, know you’re not the only one. Because it happens often, the users named it the Black Screen of Death, not because it means your gaming console is dead, but because it interrupts the gameplay. So don’t worry, your console is probably fine. This article will help you troubleshoot your PS4 black screen issue with seven possible fixes.

What Causes PS4 Black Screen of Death?

There are many reasons why the black screen error occurs on the PS4. Although it might be a troubling sign, more often, it’s a simple issue such as a PS4 connection error.

Here are some issues that can cause the PS4 Black Screen of Death:

  • Hardware issue within the console.
  • Damaged connectivity cable.
  • Incompatible or incomplete software update.
  • Corrupt system files.
  • Power surges and overheating.
  • A faulty PS4 HDMI port.

Now that you know why you’re experiencing the black screen let’s see how to fix it.

1. Restart Your PS4 Console

Whenever you encounter the black screen issue, you should try rebooting your PS4 console. There are many random problems your console might experience, and a simple restart can fix or temporarily eliminate them. By restarting the PS4, you won’t just get rid of the black screen but any possible error that could be behind it.

Restarting a PS4 console is simple. However, you can do it only if the black screen is temporary and you can access the menu. If you can’t see the menu, you must power cycle your PS4 console.

  1. In the PS4 Home menu, select the Power button.
  1. Select Power Options.
  1. When the Power Options menu appears, select Restart PS4.

2. Power Cycle the PS4 Console

Power cycling your PlayStation 4 console helps eliminate minor glitches and bugs that can cause a black screen to appear randomly. Power cycle your console to reload the resources. This will refresh your console and remove bugs and glitches that might be causing the issue.

  1. Press and hold the power button until you hear a second beep. It’ll take about seven seconds. The location of the power button will depend on the model of the Sony PlayStation 4 console you have:
  • PS4 Standard: Front-center of the console, below the power indicator light.
  • PS4 Slim: Far left side of the console, under the disc drive.
  • PS4 Pro: Far left side of the console, above the power indicator light.
  1. Unplug the power cable of the console, monitor, or TV. Wait for about 30 seconds before you plug them back in.
  2. Once the power cables are plugged in, turn your PS4 on and see if the Black Screen issue persists.

3. Make Sure the HDMI Cable and Port Are in Working Order

HDMI cables and ports can easily get damaged, resulting in no signal transmission between the console and the display device. If you use an HDMI cable for the video output and experience a PS4 Black Screen, you should check it for wear and tear. Also, check the port while you’re at it.

The HDMI cable can easily be detached from a monitor and console. You can brush the ports gently to remove any dust particles that might cause connection interruptions. After this, you can reattach the cables if you find no obvious physical damage. If you do, you should replace the cable.

Even if you can’t see any apparent damage on ports or the cable, try another port or a cable to see if this fixes your black screen issue. Another thing you could try is to use another display. Perhaps your old one is broken, causing the black screen.

4. Change Resolution (in Safe Mode)

Changing the resolution of your PS4 in safe mode is another effective way to deal with the black screen issue. Safe Mode is a diagnostics mode, so it’ll allow you to access the more advanced features of your PS4 and help you reset the database or upgrade the firmware.

To change resolution in safe mode:

  1. Turn off your PS4 console.
  2. Long press the power button until you hear the second beep.
  3. Use the USB cable to connect a controller to the PS4 console. Press the PlayStation button on the controller to boot it in safe mode.
  4. Select the Change Resolution option from the menu and press the X button on the controller.
  1. Select the suitable video output resolution and press the OK button.

5. Disable HDCP Feature

High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection is a protocol that helps prevent digital content piracy on PS4. However, your monitor, a TV, or any other display device may be incompatible with the HDCP feature. If so, the result would be a Black Screen. So, you can try turning off the HDCP feature to see if this is the problem. Here’s how:

  1. From the Home screen, go to Settings.
  1. Select System.
  1. Uncheck the Enable HDCP option.

6. Rebuild Database

Sometimes, a corrupted file stored on your PS4 console can cause the Black Screen of Death. In that case, you can rebuild your PlayStation’s database to solve the error.

Follow these steps to rebuild the PS4 database:

  1. Press the power button and hold it for 3 seconds. This way, you’ll enter the PS4 Safe Mode.
  2. Again, hold the power button and release it only after you hear the second beep. This will start your console in the Safe Mode.
  3. Connect your PS4 controller to the PS4 device with a USB cable. Press the PS button on the controller.
  4. Press the X button on the controller.
  5. Select Rebuild Database from the Safe Mode menu.
  1. The process of rebuilding the PS4 database can take a while, so be patient and wait for your console to boot up.

Once the database is rebuilt and your PlayStation 4 is booted, try playing a game and see if the Black Screen issue reappears.

7. Factory Reset the PS4 Console

Performing a factory reset of your Sony PlayStation console should always be your last resort. So, try all the methods described above to fix your black screen issue before trying this out. If you perform the factory reset, you will lose all the data from your console’s system storage. Consider making a backup of all the critical PS4 data before trying this.

To reset the PS4 console:

  1. Launch the Settings menu from the Home screen.
  2. Select Initialization from the Settings menu.
  1. Choose Initialize PS4 option.
  1. On the next screen, select the Full option. This will completely delete the PS4 system storage.
  1. The next screen will warn you about deleting all the data. Select the Initialize button to proceed.
  1. To begin the Initialization process, select the Yes button.

Note: This process can be very long. In some cases, it can even take hours. Be patient, and don’t try to reboot your console.

We hope these troubleshooting methods helped you fix the pesky PlayStation 4 black screen issue. Whether it’s a loose connection, a software glitch, or a simple system hiccup, the problem is easy to fix if you troubleshoot it step by step.

There’s nothing like the sinking feeling of pressing the power button on your PS4, hearing that promising beep, and then… nothing. The console doesn’t power on. This is likely the last thing you want to experience as a gamer. Luckily, there are some potential solutions!

Understanding the Beep

A healthy, well-functioning PlayStation 4 will emit a single beep when powered on, signaling the start of the system’s boot-up process. This is like giving a ‘hello’ or a handshake from your console, a brief audible signal that everything is working as expected.

However, when your PS4 beeps once and then shuts down, it’s a sign that all is not well. The single beep still signifies the startup attempt, but the immediate shutdown tells us the startup process has been interrupted or halted. In other words, your PS4 attempts to start up, but something is preventing it.

Sometimes, the blue light on your PS4 will pulse a few times after the beep, turn white, and then the console will power down. These interruptions could be due to several reasons. Often, it’s a hardware issue – it could be a problem with the power supply unit (PSU), a faulty hard drive (HDD), or even an overheating issue. Then, it could also be a software problem preventing the console from booting up correctly.

When the PS4 console powers down immediately after the single beep, it’s the console’s way of protecting itself. If it detected an issue during the startup sequence and continued operating, it could damage the system further. So, the shutdown is like a failsafe mechanism. Our job is to solve the mystery of what caused that failure.

Note: Everything in this article applies equally to the PS4, PS4 Slim, and PS4 Pro.

1. Check the Power Cord and Outlet

Often, the solution lies in the simplest places. The power cord might be loose or the wall outlet faulty. Ensure the power cord is plugged in firmly to both the console and the power outlet. If the issue persists, use a different power cord or outlet.

2. Avoid Power Strips

Power strips can sometimes interfere with the power your PS4 draws, causing it to shut down. If you’re using a power strip, try plugging the PS4 directly into a wall outlet in case a faulty surge protector or something similar is at fault.

3. Power Cycle the Console

Power cycling involves turning your console on and then off again. This simple act can refresh your system and solve various startup issues.

Hold down the Power button to power cycle your PS4 until all lights stop flashing. Then, unplug the power cord, wait 20 minutes, then plug it in, and try to start the PS4 again.

4. Give Safe Mode a Try

Safe mode offers a range of tools for fixing issues with your PS4. From an off state, hold down the Power button until you hear a second beep about seven seconds after the first, signaling the console is in safe mode.

You’ll need to connect one of your PS4 controllers to a USB port on your PS4 and press the PS button to use it. You can select the rebuild database option from here, which might resolve the issue.

If your PS4 won’t launch in Safe Mode, it’s often because there’s something wrong with the HDMI, USB, or power cables. Check all three to make sure they’re plugged in correctly. If you have extras, you can also swap out cables if they are faulty.

5. Consider Overheating Issues

Your PlayStation, like any other electronic equipment, is susceptible to overheating. If your PS4 is kept in a warm environment, lacks adequate airflow, or has dust-clogged air vents, it might beep and shut down as a protective measure. This might be a likely reason if your PS4 has been screaming like a banshee before this issue arose. Usually, the PS4 will give you an onscreen warning that the system has overheated, but if the heat hasn’t dissipated or is too much at startup, it might prevent your console from proceeding.

So, what can you do about it?

  1. Ventilation: Make sure your console is not boxed in. It needs room to breathe, just like us. Ensure there’s enough space around it, particularly near the air vents, for proper airflow.
  2. Cleanliness: Regularly clean the air vents to ensure they’re not dust-covered. Compressed air can do the trick, blasting away the dust particles without risking causing damage.
  3. Cool Environment: Consider the environment where your console sits. It may be worth relocating if it’s near a heat source or in a sunlit area to a cooler spot.
  4. Cleaning the inside and inspecting fans: Cleaning the console of dust on the inside and ensuring the fans are all spinning and not jammed can help. Watch a video guide first, or take your console to a pro for cleaning.
  5. Check thermal paste: If your PS4 is quite old (more than 5 years), it might be the thermal paste between the APU that houses the CPU and GPU and the PS4’s heat sink. You can do this yourself, but we suggest letting a professional do it, and they can clean and inspect the rest of the system while they’re at it.

Don’t bother with those aftermarket bolt-on console coolers. They rarely help cool a console and, in the worst-case scenario, can make your system overheat by interfering with its normal airflow. If your PS4 can’t maintain a safe temperature using its cooling system, you should fix the source of the problem rather than trying to strap more fans to your game console.

6. Check the Hard Drive (HDD)

The PS4’s hard drive houses all your game data, so a malfunctioning HDD might cause your console to beep once and then shut down.

Try reseating the hard drive, which involves removing the plastic cover, unscrewing the drive bracket, removing it, and then putting it back in. If this doesn’t work, consider replacing the HDD. There’s a brilliant pictorial guide on how to take the PS4’s drive out on iFixit, and you only need a single screwdriver to complete the whole operation.

Also, this is an excellent time to get an upgrade. You can install a larger internal drive or even an SSD, though based on what we’ve seen, putting a SATA SSD in your PS4 will only do a little to improve performance, thanks to the limited SATA II bandwidth available.

You could also try connecting the drive to a computer using USB or an internal SATA connector to see if the drive is accessible or not. This may eliminate physical drive failure as the culprit, but the drive data may still be corrupt.

If you have to install a new hard drive or fix a corrupted one, you’ll also have to install a fresh copy of the system software, bringing us to the next point.

7. Reinstall the System Software

If the beep and shutdown problem persists or you’ve put in a new drive, it may be necessary to reinstall the PS4’s system software. This process requires a USB cable, a PC, and patience, but it can solve stubborn startup issues.

You can find detailed instructions for this process on Sony’s official website. You’ll have to visit the site one way or another because the link to the latest system software is in the instructions.

You’ll need a USB thumb drive as well, and if you don’t have a Mac or PC of your own, you can use a public computer (such as at school or the library) or ask a friend if you can use their computer.

8. Examine the Power Supply Unit (PSU)

CAPTION: A PSU found on Amazon

If you’ve made it this far and your PS4 still won’t stay on, the issue may lie in the Power Supply Unit (PSU). A failing PSU can cause your console to beep and then shut down. While replacing the PSU can be a technical challenge, it’s manageable with the proper guidance. Replacement PSUs can be found on Amazon or other online retailers, and numerous guides can assist you online.

However, we’d only suggest taking this step if your PS4 is out of warranty. Most people need the equipment to test a PSU to see if it’s faulty in their homes. You can buy a new PSU under the assumption that the old one is kaput, but what would suck even more than a blown PSU is finding out that this wasn’t the problem and you’ve just bought a new PSU for no reason. We’re saying that, at this point, you should take it to a professional, which brings us to the next point.

9. Get Professional Help or Use Your Warranty

If none of the above solutions works, it might be time to call the experts. If your PS4 is still under warranty, contact Sony for a repair or replacement. If not, consider using a professional repair service. They have the tools and expertise necessary to diagnose and fix the issue.

If a motherboard or CPU is keeping you from enjoying your favorite PS4 video games, no amount of unplugging, DIY fixes, or reading forums will solve the problem. You’ll need a small or large component replacement for your console to make it work again.

While PlayStation 4 is our focus, many of these troubleshooting steps can apply to other consoles, such as Xbox and Nintendo, not just to fix PS4 problems. Consoles like the Xbox One aren’t immune to startup issues or data corruption. If your PS4 is irreparable, you have our condolences, but it might finally be time to look at buying a PlayStation 5.

The PlayStation 5, or PS5 as it’s more commonly known, is Sony’s latest entry in the console wars. It’s a powerhouse, boasting impressive specs that promise to deliver a new level of immersion for gamers.

One of the key features that Sony has introduced with the new PS5 is the Performance Mode. But what exactly is this mode, and how does it affect your gameplay? Let’s dive in.

Understanding Performance Mode

Performance Mode is a graphics setting on the PS5 that prioritizes framerate over resolution. In other words, when you enable this mode, your PS5 will aim to deliver a smooth 60 frames per second (fps) gameplay experience, even if it means dialing back on the graphical quality a bit. This is a significant step up from the 30fps gamers have grown accustomed to on consoles like the PS4 Pro.

The higher frame rates offered by the PS5 Performance Mode can make a world of difference in your gaming experience. Whether you’re swinging through the skyscrapers of New York in “Spider-Man: Miles Morales” or battling it out in the galaxy far, far away in a new “Star Wars” game, the smoothness offered by 60fps can make your gameplay feel more responsive and immersive.

Note: This setting only tells the PS5 what you generally prefer; it doesn’t prevent you from manually switching to a different mode within a game’s menus. So you can override this on a per-game basis.

Resolution Mode vs. Performance Mode

But how does this compare to the PS5’s Resolution Mode? Also known as Quality Mode, the graphics setting prioritizes image quality and resolution over framerate. When you enable this mode, your PS5 will aim to deliver gameplay at a (targeted) 4K resolution, even if it means the framerate might drop to 30fps. This mode is perfect for games with beautiful graphics and slower-paced gameplay, where you can take the time to appreciate the high level of detail in the game world.

However, remember that there are many situations where you won’t see the difference between the image quality in Resolution or Performance mode. If you’re still using a 1080p (AKA “Full HD”) TV, you won’t see much benefit from running in resolution mode. The PS5 still targets 4K but then “downsamples” that image to 1080p. This does result in a better 1080p image, but even in Performance mode, most games render above 1080p, so you’re still getting a better picture either way.

Also, if you sit too far from your 4K TV set, you may not see the detail offered by 4K. Most people underestimate how close they have to sit to their 4K set to see 4K detail. For example, the standard 55″ screen size requires you to sit closer than 6ft from the TV.

But, some aspects of resolution mode may be visible at any distance since you can set other settings (such as lighting quality or foliage density) to higher levels in quality mode. However, higher frame rates are always visible at any distance and affect other aspects besides visuals, specifically how snappy the game feels in response to your input.

How to Enable Performance Mode

Turning on the PS5 Performance Mode is a breeze. Here’s how to do it.

  1. Turn on your PlayStation 5 console.
  2. From the main dashboard, navigate to the top-right corner of the screen and select the Settings icon (represented by a cog).
  1. In the Settings menu, select Saved Data and Game/App Setting.
  1. Within this menu, find and select Game Presets.
  1. You’ll see an option for Game Default, Performance Mode, or Resolution Mode in the Game Presets menu.
  1. You will now have the option to choose between Performance Mode or Resolution Mode. Select Performance Mode to prioritize higher frame rates.

And that’s it! Your PS5 will prioritize performance, offering smoother gameplay at higher frame rates. Remember, you can always return to this menu to switch back to Resolution Mode if you prefer to prioritize graphical quality and resolution.

How to Get 120FPS in PS5 Games

A few select PS5 games, such as “Gran Turismo 7,” support frame rates above 60fps. However, this is only possible on televisions or computer monitors with refresh rates of 120Hz or above. Whether your TV can do this can be tricky since you may have to dig into some technical specifications. Still, the PS5 makes it easy to figure out in a few seconds if the option to activate this mode is unavailable, it means your current TV setup does not support it.

Here are the steps to turn 120Hz output on or off on your PS5:

  1. Start from the PS5’s home screen.
  2. Navigate to the top right-hand corner and select Settings.
  1. Within the Settings menu, select Screen and Video.
  1. In the Screen and Video menu, go to Video Output.
  1. Here, you will find an option called 120Hz Output. Select Automatic to turn 120Hz output on or off as per your preference.

Games that support 120Hz output will render at more than 60 fps if this option is activated. Not all games will reach or sustain this number, but you will get more than the normal performance mode.

There’s even more to the 120Hz mode beyond this. Some games, such as “Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart” and “Horizon Forbidden West” have 40fps modes that only work in 120Hz mode. That’s because 40 divides evenly into 120Hz (but not 60Hz), which allows this frame rate to work without visual artifacts. This 40fps mode offers a nice middle ground between quality and performance modes.

There’s no harm in activating 120Hz mode all the time since you can still manually set individual games to 60fps or even 30fps in their menus, both of which work perfectly at 120Hz.

Note: If your 120Hz television or monitor does not support HDMI VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), running in 120Hz mode may lead to screen tearing when the game can’t quite hit that 120fps mark.

Special In-Game Settings

The 40fps mode we just discussed is an example of a special in-game graphics mode that you will only see within the menus of a given game. The game presets of the PS5 system itself are binary, with only two options. Some games, such as “Ghostwire Tokyo,” have many different graphics modes, with Ghostwire sporting ten!

These modes can be anything the game developer chooses, but usually boil down to the following:

  1. 30fps Fidelity mode
  2. 60fps Performance mode
  3. 40fps balanced mode (if supported and the 120Hz output enabled)
  4. 120fps High Frame Rate Mode (if supported and the 120Hz output enabled)
  5. Ray tracing features activated (at a frame rate specified by the developer)

Ray tracing, a feature previously exclusive to high-end PC gaming GPUs such as the NVIDIA RTX series, is a rendering technique that simulates how light interacts with objects in a video game. It can make lighting and reflections look incredibly realistic, adding another layer of immersion to your gaming experience. However, ray tracing can be demanding on the console’s hardware, which might lead to some stuttering or low frame rates if your game is particularly graphics-intensive.

What About PS4 Games?

The PS5 is backward compatible with nearly every game ever released for the PS4. Your preset choice for PS5 games generally does not affect PS4 games, which run at their PS4 Pro settings by default on PS5.

Some PS4 games have been patched by their developers to take advantage of the extra horsepower in the PS5, which usually means there will be a menu option (or a default state) where the game runs at 4K60, or perhaps even over 60fps if 120Hz output is enabled.

In some cases where an unpatched PS4 game has a 60fps mode, it will limit its resolution to 1080p or even less since these were the PS4 Pro performance mode settings.

Unpatched PS4 games with unlocked frame rates and dynamic resolution scaling can often reach 4K60fps without special patching by the developer.

The bottom line is that with PS4 games, you’ll have to deal with performance and quality on a case-by-case basis when you play them on your PS5. Some PS4 games have been remastered into native PS5 games, and often you can get a free upgrade to this version (e.g., Cyberpunk 2077) or pay a small fee, such as with Grand Theft Auto V.

What About Other Consoles?

It’s also worth noting that the PS5 Performance Mode is one of many options for gamers seeking higher frame rates. The Xbox Series X and S, the PS5’s main competitors, also offer a similar feature. When it comes to playing Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One games on the latest Xbox consoles, Microsoft has found a way to boost frame rate and resolution in some older games without any help from the developer.

Try Performance Mode in a Fast Paced Game

The PS5 Performance Mode is a game-changer for console gamers. It offers a smoother, more responsive gameplay experience, making it a great choice for fast-paced action games. However, if you’re a gamer who values graphical quality and high resolution over framerate, the PS5’s Resolution Mode might be more up your alley. Either way, the choice is yours, and the PS5’s game presets make it easy to switch between these modes as you see fit.

As the complexity and depth of video games increase, so does their demand for storage space—some titles already exceed 100GB! If you own a Sony PlayStation 5, routine storage management is necessary, given its low-capacity 825GB SSD. Deleting games you no longer play is the most straightforward way to reclaim space.

The PS5 console offers multiple approaches to removing games from its SSD (and extended storage drive if you have one). This guide walks you through each technique, making it easy to free up storage and accommodate new games.

Will Uninstalling a Game Delete Its Save Data?

Your PS5 stores save files separately from game data, so you don’t lose your progress even if you delete a video game. You can reinstall the game later, and it should automatically detect the save files.

If you want to delete or backup your save data, visit your console’s Storage management panel (more on that later).

1. Uninstall Video Games From the Home Screen

The fastest way to delete a video game on your PS5 is through the Home Screen. Just highlight the game’s thumbnail, press the DualSense controller’s Options button, and select Delete.

Tip: Select Information on the context menu to check how much space the game occupies on the console’s storage before deleting it.

2. Uninstall Video Games via the Game Library

If a video game does not appear on your PS5’s Home Screen (it only shows nine of your most recently-played games), you can delete it via the Game Library. Here’s how:

  1. Scroll to the right of the Home Screen and select Game Library.
  1. Highlight the game you want to uninstall and press Options.
  1. Select Delete.

3. Uninstall Video Games via Storage Management

Another way to uninstall PS5 games is through the console’s Storage management panel. This method is ideal if you want to delete multiple games simultaneously while having a clearer picture of how much space you can free up.

Here’s how:

  1. Select the Gear icon on the top left of the screen.
  1. Scroll down the Settings menu and choose Storage.
  1. Select Console Storage > Games and Apps to view a list of installed games on the internal storage drive.
  1. Check the boxes next to the video games you want to uninstall—you should see the size of each game, including the amount of potential free space you can gain if you delete your selections.
  1. Select Delete.

4. Uninstall Games via the PlayStation App

If you’ve set up the PS App to work on your iPhone or Android, you can remotely delete games from your PS5. Like with the Storage management console on your PS5, it lets you delete multiple games at once while allowing you to figure out how much space you get to free up. Just:

  1. Open the PS App.
  2. Tap the Settings icon (top right of the screen) within the Play tab.
  3. Tap PS5 Storage at the top of the screen.
  4. Select the games you want to delete.
  5. Tap Delete Game(s).

Your PS5 should automatically delete the game in Rest Mode or when you next turn on the console.

If you don’t have the PS App on your mobile device:

  1. Download and install the PS App from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.
  2. Open the PS App and sign in with your PlayStation Account.
  3. Tap the Gear icon (top right of the screen) within the Play tab.
  4. Tap Link Console to App.
  5. Select your PS5 and tap Confirm.

You can now delete games on your PS5.

5. Uninstall Games on the Extended Storage Device

If you’ve set up an external hard drive or SSD to work as extended storage on your PS5, you can delete video games from it through the Home Screen, Game Library (make sure to scroll down to the Extended storage section), or the PS App (switch to the USB tab within PS Storage). The steps are identical to removing games from the console’s internal storage drive.

Additionally, you can uninstall games from the extended drive through the PS5’s Storage management panel, but the process is somewhat different. Begin by connecting the storage device to a SuperSpeed USB port on your PS5—the USB-C port on the front or one of the two USB-A ports on the back. Then:

  1. Open the PS5’s Settings menu and select Storage.
  1. Go to USB Extended Storage > Games and Apps.
  1. Highlight any game within the list, press Options, and choose the Select Items to Delete option.
  1. Mark the games you want to remove—you should see the size of each game, including the amount of free space you can free up if you delete your selections.
  1. Select Delete.

Delete Saved Game Data on Your PS5

If you’d like to delete the saved data for a video game after you’re done uninstalling it:

  1. Open the PS5’s Settings menu.
  2. Select Storage.
  3. Go to Console Storage > Save Data.
  4. Select the save data for the game.
  5. Select Delete.

Optionally, you can back up your saved data to PlayStation Plus or a flash drive (PS4 games only) before deleting them. Just switch to the Upload to PS Plus or Copy to USB Drive tabs to upload or copy the files.

Remove PS5 Games You No Longer Play

As you just learned, you’ve got multiple ways to delete games on the PS5. You can do that via the Home Screen, Game Library, Console management screen, or the PS App. If you want to reinstall a game, just redownload it via the PlayStation Store (you should find a list of your purchases within the Game Library) or copy the game content via its Blu-ray disc.

Due to massive enhancements to performance and stability, the PlayStation 5 is Sony’s best console to date. However, it has its fair share of issues. If the user interface acts sluggish or you notice odd quirks while interacting with your PS5, one possible reason is a cluttered, corrupt, or fragmented system database.

That’s where rebuilding the database on your PlayStation 5 can make a difference, and this tutorial will provide step-by-step instructions to help you with that.

Why You Should Rebuild the PS5 Database

The database on your PS5 is where the console stores essential information, including data about installed games, saved game files, and media gallery items. However, over time, it can get cluttered with redundant, broken, and obsolete data.

Suppose you’re experiencing slower loading times, game crashes, or other unexpected behaviors—e.g., game and app icons remaining on the Home Screen long after uninstalling them. In that case, these can often be signs that the database needs rebuilding.

A PS5 database rebuild reorganizes your data, cleans up loose ends, and enhances how your PS5 functions, leading to smoother interactions and gaming experiences. Don’t worry—nothing gets deleted.

The problem? This procedure can take anywhere from just minutes to several hours, depending on the data on your console. Expect the time to substantially increase if you have an NVMe SSD in the expansion bay or an external drive for copying and moving data.

Because of the potentially time-consuming nature, it’s a good idea to rebuild the PS5 database after working on other applicable fixes related to the issue you’re encountering. For example, have you tried updating the PS5’s system software?

How to Rebuild the PS5 Database

Rebuilding the PS5 database is a straightforward process that can be done after booting the console into Safe Mode. But what is Safe Mode? It’s a separate startup environment where you can perform maintenance and troubleshooting activities, including database rebuilding.

Before you begin, you must completely shut down the console—press the PS button on the DualSense wireless controller, select Power, and choose Turn Off PS5. You must also connect the expanded storage drive if one is set up. Then:

  1. Hold down the Power button on your console beeps for the second time—this boots the PS5 in Safe Mode.
  2. Connect your PS5’s DualSense controller via its charging cable to any USB port on the console and press the PS button—you’ll see a list of Safe Mode options on the screen.
  3. Use the D-pad buttons to navigate to Clear Cache and Rebuild Database—press X to select it.

Note: Depending on the make and model of your PS5, you might see the option simply labeled as Rebuild Database.

  1. You should now see two sub-options—Clear System Software Cache and Rebuild Database. We recommend you select Clear System Software Cache and clear the cache on your PS5 before rebuilding the database—it’s faster, removes temporary system data, and could resolve your issue. If the problem persists, re-enter Safe Mode and select Rebuild Database sub-option.
  1. Wait until your PS5 rebuilds the database on your PS5—a progress bar indicator reveals the estimated amount of time remaining. The console should exit Safe Mode and boot normally after the procedure.

Warning: Do not disconnect your PS5 from its power source during the database rebuilding phase since that can severely corrupt the console’s system software.

Your PS5’s Database Has Been Rebuilt

A healthy PS5 database is crucial for a smoother experience with the console, and a complete rebuild can play a significant role in getting it out of a rut.

The process takes a while to complete, but with luck, you’ll only have to do that a handful of times over the years. If time is not an issue, there’s no harm in repeating the action once every few months as a maintenance measure.

Just remember—rebuilding the PS5’s database is not the ultimate solution to all issues. If you continue encountering problems, other advanced troubleshooting techniques exist, like resetting the PS5 to factory defaults.

Rest Mode is a Sony PlayStation 5 feature that conserves power when you aren’t actively using the console. Unlike a total shutdown, it keeps the system software and open video games in memory, allowing you to hop back into the action in seconds. Even better, it charges your accessories and downloads games and updates, also much quicker than normal.

Your PS5 automatically enters Rest Mode after 20 minutes of inactivity. However, if you’d like to manually put the console into Rest Mode or adjust the automatic activation time, this tutorial will show you how.

How to Put Your PS5 in Rest Mode

You can put your PS5 into Rest Mode whenever you want. If you have a game running, just pause or exit to the Home Screen, and then:

  1. Press the PS button on your DualSense wireless controller to bring up the Control Center.
  2. Use the right thumbstick or D-pad button to highlight the Power icon.
  3. Press the X button and select the Enter Rest Mode menu option.

Your TV or monitor screen goes black and the power indicator lights on the PS5’s casing flashes amber to confirm it’s in Rest Mode. Do not disconnect the power cable since the console still needs power—around 0.36 to 3.2 watts per hour—to remain in this state.

How to Get Your PS5 Out of Rest Mode

You have a couple of ways to get a PS5 console out of Rest Mode. Just press the PS button on the DualSense controller. Or, press the Power button on the console’s casing. The PS5 should beep and start up.

If you entered Rest Mode with a game running in the background, select its icon on the Home Screen to resume playing immediately.

How to Change Rest Mode’s Automatic Timer

If you’d like to change how quickly the PS5 enters Safe Mode on its own:

  1. Select the Gear icon on the top left corner of the Home Screen.
  1. Scroll down the Settings menu and select System.
  1. Go to Power Saving > Set Time Until PS5 Enters Rest Mode.
  1. Select the While Playing Games option.
  1. Pick your preferred duration before entering Rest Mode while idling on the Home Screen or a video game or app—the shortest (and default) is After 20 Minutes, and you can increase that to After 1 Hour, After 2 Hours, After 3 Hours, and so on.
  1. Select During Media Playback to adjust the Rest Mode timer during media playback—the shortest (and default) is After 1 Hour.

Rest Your PS5 Console

Entering Rest Mode on your PlayStation 5 is not only useful from a power management perspective—it also increases the longevity of the console by preventing it from working extra hard to load everything from scratch for each new gaming session. Sure—it’s not ideal for every scenario. For example, if you’re troubleshooting the gaming console, looking to boot into Safe Mode, or plan not to game for days, shut down your PS5 instead.

All the stuff on your Sony PlayStation 5—the big games you downloaded, the save files you need, and your favorite gameplay clips—are super-important. It’s crucial to keep them safe in case something goes wrong, like data corruption, or if you’re considering moving to a new console.

Fortunately, the PS5’s system software allows for a seamless backup process and offers the flexibility to choose the types of data you want to secure. Restoring your game data is just as convenient. This tutorial will show you how to back up and restore the data on a PS5 console.

What Can You Back Up On Your PS5?

Backing up your PS5 involves creating a copy of your data and settings that you can restore later. The internal storage drive consists of the following data types:

  • Downloaded apps and video games.
  • Save files.
  • The media gallery—video clips and screenshots.
  • Your system settings.

The good news—you can back up all the above data on your game console to an external hard drive or SSD. If you have a PlayStation Plus subscription, you also have the option to upload your game saves—arguably the most vital data—to the PSN servers.

Additionally, you can copy individual save files—limited to PS4 games only—and media gallery items to a standard USB flash stick.

Back-Up Data to External USB Storage

An external HDD or SSD is a simple and effective way to back up your PS5 data. With this method, you create a tangible duplicate of your data that you can quickly restore at any time. This method is ideal if you favor direct control over your backup data or don’t have a PlayStation Plus subscription for cloud-based game save backups.

The external drive must have adequate space for your backup. Since the PS5 comes with an 825GB internal storage drive, a 1TB USB drive is more than enough. However, a larger drive might be necessary if you have an NVMe M.2 SSD in the expansion bay.

Interestingly, the PS5 supports selective backups, where you can focus on specific data categories, allowing you to use a smaller drive for backup purposes. For instance, if your only concern is saved data and the media gallery and you’re willing to re-download games, a USB flash stick with 8-16GB capacity should cut it.

To back up the data on a PS5 to an external storage device, connect the drive to your PS5, and then:

  1. Select the Settings icon on the top-right of the Home Screen.
  1. Enter the System category.
  1. Go to System Software > Back Up and Restore.
  1. Select Back Up Your PS5.
  1. Choose the types of data you want to back up—games and apps, save data, and media gallery. The backup always includes a copy of your PS5’s settings, so you can’t deselect it. Select Next to continue.

Note: The indicator on the top left projects the amount of used and free space on the external drive if you copy the selected data.

  1. Name the backup within the Description box (or keep the default label intact) and select Back Up.
  1. Wait until your PS5 backs up your data to the external drive. The console should reboot automatically a couple of times during the process.

If your PS5 indicates the connected drive is unsupported, use a PC or Mac to format it in the FAT32 or exFAT file system and retry.

If you use a Windows PC:

  1. Open File Explorer, right-click the external drive, and select Format.
  1. Set File system to FAT32 or exFAT and select Start.
  1. Select OK on the confirmation pop-up.

If you use an Apple Mac:

  1. Open the Launchpad and select Other > Disk Utility.
  2. Select the external drive on the sidebar and choose Erase.
  3. Set the Format to exFAT or MS-DOS (FAT) and select Erase.

Back-Up Data to PS Plus Cloud Storage

You can upload up to 100 GB of PS5 save data and 100 GB of PS4 save data to the PSN servers if you’re a PlayStation Plus subscriber. By default, automatic PS Plus uploads are enabled for PS5 and PS4 games, so you don’t have to do anything. If not, here’s how to turn it on:

  1. Open your PS5’s Settings menu and select Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
  1. Go to Saved Data (PS5) > Sync Saved Data.
  1. Enable the Auto-Sync Saved Data option.
  1. Return to the Save Data and Game/App Settings screen and select Saved Data (PS4) > Auto-Upload.
  1. Turn on the switch next to Enable Auto-Upload.

Alternatively, you can keep automatic updates disabled and upload saved data manually. Here’s how:

  1. Go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
  1. Go to Saved Data (PS5)/Saved Data (PS4) > Console Storage.
  1. Switch to the Upload to Cloud Storage tab, mark the games you want to upload, and select Upload.

Back-Up Game Saves and Media Gallery to Flash Drive

Instead of using the PS5’s external drive backup function, you can manually copy all or specific amounts of saved data from PS4 games to a USB flash stick. You can also back up media gallery items (screenshots and video clips) to it.

To copy PS4 save files to a compatible flash stick, connect it to your console, and then:

  1. Visit the PS5’s Settings menu and select Storage.
  1. Go to Console Storage > Saved Data.
  1. Select PS4 Games.
  1. Switch to the Copy to USB Drive tab, mark the games you want to copy, and select Copy.

To copy media gallery items to the USB drive:

  1. Visit the PS5’s Settings menu and select Storage.
  1. Go to Console Storage > Media Gallery.
  1. Enable the Select Multiple toggle on the left corner of the screen.
  1. Mark the items you want to copy to the drive, select the More icon (three dots) to the right of the screen, and select Copy to USB Drive.

Restore PS5 From an External Drive Backup

If you have to factory reset your PS5, replace its internal storage drive, or upgrade to a new console, you can choose to restore the contents of your external backup drive. Assuming you made a complete backup, the process ensures you return to your games with all your progress, settings, and profiles intact.

Warning: Restoring a PS5 backup will permanently wipe any existing data from the console’s internal storage.

To restore PS5 data from an external drive backup, connect the storage device to your PS5, and then:

  1. Visit the PS5’s Settings menu and select System.
  1. Go to System Software > Back Up and Restore.
  1. Select Restore Your PS5.
  1. Pick the backup you want to restore.
  1. Select Restore.

Note: If the restoration process fails, update the PS5’s system software to its latest version and try again.

Restore Cloud Saves From PS Plus

If you have saved games backed up online thanks to PS Plus, they should auto-sync with the internal storage when you sign in to a PS5 with your PSN account. If they don’t, you can restore game saves manually. Here’s how:

  1. Visit the PS5’s Settings menu and select Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
  1. Go to Saved Data (PS5)/Saved Data (PS4) > Cloud Storage.
  1. Under the Download to Console Storage tab, mark the games you want to download, and select Download.

Restore Game Saves From Flash Drive

If you copied your PS4 save files to a USB flash drive, you can copy them back to the console’s internal storage. Here’s how:

  1. Visit the PS5’s Settings menu and select Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
  1. Go to Saved Data (PS4) > USB Drive.
  1. Under the Copy to Console Storage tab, mark the games you want to copy, and select Copy.

View Media Gallery Items on Flash Drive

You can’t copy back any media gallery items on a flash stick, but you can access and view them. To do that, connect the drive to your console, and then:

  1. Visit the PS5’s Settings menu and select Storage.
  1. Go to Console Storage > Media Gallery.
  1. Under the USB tab, select the PS4 or PS5 folder.
  1. Select Create.
  1. Select Screenshots.
  1. Select a screenshot thumbnail to enlarge it.

You Now Know How to Back Up and Restore the PS5

Backing up your PS5 is crucial, and it’s not just about saving your games—it’s about safeguarding everything on your console. With this guide, you now know how to do it. Whether it’s copying everything to an external drive, uploading game saves to the cloud, or copying save files and gallery items to a flash stick, you’ve got multiple methods to protect your data. It’s always good to know all of your important data is safe and sound, and that you can restore them quickly if needed.

Your PlayStation 5‘s 825GB internal storage drive seems like a lot, but modern video games can be large. Many titles demand upwards of 50GB, with some even exceeding 100GB. As a result, you may run out of storage sooner than later.

An external hard drive or SSD is a practical and cost-effective solution. It ramps up available storage space, allowing you to fit more games and helping the console run smoothly and efficiently.

This tutorial will provide a straightforward approach to setting up an external hard drive on the Sony PS5 and using it to move, install, and copy games.

Prepare for the Initial Setup

To extend the storage on your PS5, you must have an external hard drive or SSD that’s USB 3.0-compatible with a capacity of at least 250GB. Don’t worry if the drive is too big—the console handles sizes up to 8TB.

Additionally, you need a USB-3.0-compliant cable to connect the external drive to your PS5. If you’re unsure, just use the cable that came with the drive’s packaging.

It’s also necessary to free up the SuperSpeed USB-C port at the front or one of the USB-A ports at the rear of the console, depending on the cable your external drive uses. The forward-facing USB-A port is not compatible with extended storage media.

As a final step, ensure your PS5’s system software is up-to-date. That improves hardware compatibility and resolves known issues with the extended storage setup process. Navigate to Settings > System > Software Update to update the system software.

Format the External USB Drive

Assuming you have everything ready, it’s time to set up the external drive to work as an extended storage device with your PlayStation 5.

Warning: Back up any data on the external hard drive, as the PS5 requires erasing it before setup.

Begin by connecting the USB drive to the USB-C port on the front or a USB-A port on the rear of the console (there are two of them). Do not connect the drive through a USB hub. Then:

  1. Select the Settings icon on the top right of the screen.
  1. Scroll down the Settings menu and select Storage.
  1. Go to USB Extended Storage > Format as USB Extended Storage.
  1. Select Yes and wait until the console formats the drive.
  1. Select OK to finish the setup process.

Move Games to the Extended Storage

With the hard drive set up as an extended storage device on the PS5, you can start moving games to it immediately. Here’s how:

  1. Highlight the game you want to move on the Home Screen or Game Library.
  1. Press the Options button and select Move Games and Apps.
  1. Check the boxes next to any other games you want to move and select Move.
  1. Select OK.
  1. Wait until the console moves the games from its internal drive to the extended storage. It could take a while, depending on the latter’s writing speed.

Install Games on the Extended Storage

It’s possible to configure your PS5 to install games directly to its extended storage, but the functionality is restricted to PS4 versions of video games only. To set that up:

  1. Visit the PS5’s Settings menu and select Storage.
  1. Go to Installation Location > PS4 Games and Apps.
  1. Press the Options button and select USB Extended Storage.

Digital and disc-based PS4 games should automatically copy data to the external drive from now onward.

Copy Back Games to Internal Storage

Developers design PS5 games to take advantage of the internal drive’s blazing-fast performance, so the console restricts you from playing them via extended storage. Hence, if you want to play a transferred PS5 game, you must copy it back. To do that:

  1. Highlight the game on the Home Screen or Game Library and choose Copy.
  1. Wait until your console finishes moving back the game.

Unlike PS5 games, you can play PS4 games from the external storage drive. Just select Play on the Home Screen or Game Library. However, if you want to benefit from the internal storage’s enhanced read speed, here’s how to move them back:

  1. Highlight the game on the Home Screen, press the Options button, and choose Move Games and Apps.
  1. Select any other games you’d like to copy back and select Move.
  1. Select OK and wait until the console copies the selected item or items back.

Delete Games on the Extended Storage

If your USB extended storage device begins filling up, you can delete games to free up space. Here’s how:

  1. Open the PS5’s Settings menu and select Storage.
  1. Select USB Extended Storage > Games and Apps.
  1. Pick a game and select the Options button.
  1. Pick the Select Items to Delete option.
  1. Enable the boxes next to any other games you want to remove and select Delete.

Remove the Extended Storage

You must only unplug a USB extended storage drive after safely unmounting it first. To do that:

  1. Go to Settings > Storage.
  1. Select USB Extended Storage > Safely Remove from PS5.
  1. Disconnect the USB extended storage drive from your PS5 console.

Remember to plug the external drive back in whenever you want to move or copy back games.

You’ve Extended Your PS5’s Storage

That wraps it up! Boosting the PlayStation 5’s storage with an external hard drive or SSD is a smart move for any hardcore gamer. Granted, it doesn’t pack the same punch as slotting in an NVMe M.2 SSD, but it provides ample space for an expanding collection of games and puts the hassle of PS5 storage management in the backseat.
